PE Wax - Frequently Asked Questions

Q1 How do I select the right PE wax particle size for my ink formulation?
For finer surface finish and higher gloss retention, choose smaller particle sizes (D50 3.5-5.0µm) like SP-C5 or SP-C3. For more pronounced matting effects and better rub resistance, larger particles (D50 6.0-10.0µm) such as SP-3620 or SP-31 are recommended. The selection depends on your target gloss level, film thickness, and printing method.
Q2 What is the difference between HDPE and LDPE based waxes?
HDPE waxes like SP-C3 and SP990 have higher melting points (120-130°C) and offer better hardness and scratch resistance. LDPE/PE waxes have lower melting points (112-121°C) and provide better slip and lubricity. Choose HDPE for applications demanding high heat resistance and surface hardness, and LDPE for enhanced processability and gloss control.
Q3 Can I use the same PE wax for both solvent-based and water-based systems?
For water-based systems, we recommend WP-32W (OPE wax). It is specifically formulated for water-based inks, wood coatings, and leather coatings. It offers high transparency and anti-blocking properties. Standard PE waxes are generally designed for solvent-based systems. Always test compatibility before full-scale production.
Q4 What is the typical addition level for PE wax in inks and coatings?
Typical addition levels range from 0.5% to 3% of total formulation weight. For rub resistance and scratch protection, start with 1-2%. For matting effects, higher levels up to 3% may be needed. Overloading can cause surface defects or poor intercoat adhesion. We recommend conducting dosage ladder tests for your specific system.
Q5 How does iSuoChem® PE wax compare to Clariant Ceridust or Honeywell counterparts?
iSuoChem® PE waxes are direct replacements for major brands. For example, SP-3620 matches Clariant Ceridust 3620 and Shamrock S-393. SP-C5 matches Honeywell C5. SP990 is comparable to BYK990-991. Our products offer equivalent performance with competitive pricing and consistent quality. Sample testing is available for validation.
Q6 What is the recommended storage condition for PE wax?
Store PE wax in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep containers tightly sealed to prevent moisture absorption and contamination. Under proper storage conditions (below 40°C, humidity <60%), shelf life is 24 months from production date. Avoid stacking too high to prevent caking.
